Sports Mouthguards
Protect your smile while staying active
At Briarmeads Dental Practice, we believe that taking care of your oral health should go hand in hand with enjoying life. If you or your child play sports, a custom-made mouthguard is one of the smartest investments you can make for long-term care and protection.
What is a mouthguard (gum shield)?
A mouthguard — sometimes called a gum shield — is a flexible, tailored appliance that fits snugly over the teeth and gums. It cushions and protects against impact, helping to minimise damage to teeth and soft tissues during sports and recreational activities.
The benefits of a custom-fitted option
Off the shelf mouthguards can feel bulky, slip or reduce your ability to breathe freely. By contrast, at Briarmeads Dental we create custom-fitted mouthguards designed precisely for your bite. We take an impression of your teeth, and then construct your guard using specialist materials to ensure maximum protection – without compromising comfort.
Who can benefit?
Whether you’re a child or adult, we recommend wearing a mouthguard if you play:
- Contact sports such as rugby, football, boxing, hockey, basketball or lacrosse
- “Non-contact” or recreational activities like skateboarding, mountain biking, or gymnastics that may involve falls or facial impact
Please note: You should not wear removable orthodontic retainers or other removable appliances during sports or any activity that carries a risk of injury to the mouth.
Why make the investment?
The cost of a custom mouthguard is minimal when considered against the potential expense, distress and trauma arising from a sports accident, e.g., broken teeth or a jaw injury. The peace of mind of a well-fitting guard is well worth it.
